On hiatus
Hello there.
I’m Valerie, and I’m the person who has been updating this tumblr. I’m leaving the University though, and I’m not sure if my future replacement will continue this blog. I hope so, but there’s no guarantee.
So I wanted to explain the lack of posts in the future.
You are welcome to follow me at my personal tumblr. It will have some of the same items as here, but the majority of it will not be related to media and design. It’s also a little stagnant right now, but should pick up soon.
Thanks for following Rice Student Media!
The technology may be new, the speed faster, the culture different, but in journalism, the old rules still apply: be skeptical, check it out.

Great point from Clark Hoyt. The Web — and your audience — also allows you to verify information better and faster than ever.

“If they’re deciding the merits of a book’s newsworthiness on the basis of whether or not it might offend one of their corporate partners, it’s an abdication of the primacy of letting the news value dictate the news,” says David Folkenflik, NPR’s media correspondent.
Folkenflik says such a decision would be both troubling and a sign of how interconnected many of the modern media are. He says Winfrey’s stature has made her untouchable to many in the broadcast media.
